 Urbano

One of the fundamental postulates that StudioARS follows is that the designing process and cadastral activity are set apart far too much. Taking into consideration that both cadastral acts and designing are dealing with the same subject matter - analysis of the same elements (pipes, underterrain ducts) from different aspects. Our target is to create a family of products that would render designing and cadastral activity functional, efficient and rational.

For the reasons set above, the program application Urbano is developed and used for implementation of cadastral tasks – GIS of infrastructure. The program is based upon the innovative Series 6 technology and provides for functionality necessary to carry out all GIS tasks. The network that has been defined by Series 6 can automatically be processed by Urbano and vice-versa. Urbano operates within Autodesk MAP and essentially improves its functionality when underterrain duct arrangement is in question.

When network, consists of nodes and sections, is defined through procedures available in Series 6 , with Urbano it is possible to continue in the GIS direction. First of all it is possible to use arbitrary internal data (user data) or to connect, in different ways, elements to external databases. It is possible to make any kind of search, thematic mapping or reviews. Also it is possible to convert data to and from SHP formats. Any external document can be easily joined to any element with automatic procedure. It is very easy to convert the whole desktop project with all elements to Internet using MapGuide technology.

Structure ____________

In addition to all Series 6 modules Urbano adds two additional modules, Data Extension and Database Extension.

Data Extension is generally used for operating with internal data – user data. It is possible to define any kind and number of data which can be defined for the elements of the system (nodes and sections).

Database Extension is designed for operating with external sources of data. Those sources could be any type of database, external documents, SHP files, Internet and so on.

Both modules can be added to standard Canalis or Hydra, and in that way improve functionality of Canalis or Hydra in GIS direction. For example, it is possible to read and draw from external database part of the network with all necessary data and later on perform some design tasks (calculation, redesign or so on). After finishing the task it is possible to save back the redesigned network to the original database.

The main characteristics of Urbano are as follows:

User data.
Term 'user data' stands for data which are stored in the drawing. User data can be of any kind (integer, real, text), and it is possible to define any number of user data. Together with user data look up values could be defined. Definition of the user data is made through efficient procedure. According to defined user data it is possible to create user reviews, thematic mapping, searching and so on.

Query.
Inside of Urbano there is efficient procedure for quering through the drawing according to any data and any criteria. It is possible to make complex queries according to user data or links to external data. Set of elements which satisfies the criteria could be reviewed, selected or emphasized to any color or line width. All queries could be saved for the later use.

Sections.
When complete infrastructure is defined, with all necessary data (position, diameters, depths) it is possible to draw section according to arbitrary line. This procedure is extremly useful when new infrastructure is due to be designed or build and when it is necessary to analyze where is existing infrastructure and what is nature of it.

Drawing of network from database.
Urbano provides support for any Windows database including Access, SQL Server and Oracle. If network is saved in the external database in appropriate format it is possible to draw the whole network or part of it. Basic condition is to have tables/views of nodes and sections. Node table must have node names and coordinates and section table has to have section names and the names of the ending nodes. Urbano automatically creates Series 6 topology which enables all productivity tools for editing and analyzing of data.

Importing of data from database.
In addition to topological data in external database according to which Urbano can draw the network, it is possible to read in the drawing any kind of additional data which describe nodes and sections. According to definition of data in the database, Urbano creates equivalent user data (internal data). Those data can be used for any action such as reviewing, thematic mapping, quering and so on. If any data is changed through procedure of refreshing and updating of database it is possible to change the data inside of database.

Linking to external database.
Another mechanism which Urbano offers is not to read in necessary data to the drawing but to link to external database. That mechanism enables Urbano to handle with much more data which is placed outside of drawing. Linked data are available for any operation such as reviews, thematic mapping, additional analysis and so on. It is possible from within Urbano to change any data inside of database directly. Also it is possible to convert Urbano linking mechanism to AutoCAD MAP link template mechanism.

Linking to external documents.
Urbano offers functionality to connect efficiently to any kind of external documents such as photos, sketches, movies, schemes and so on. It is possible to make connection rule which connect any number of documents to all elements of the network (nodes and sections). Definition of the connection rule is very flexible.

Shape import/export.
To better communicate with the other GIS systems Urbano offers possibility of operating with ESRI SHP files. Urbano can import or export SHP files with node or network topology. It is possible to read in or write out complete SHP file together with atribute data inside of DBF. After reading of SHP file Urbano creates Series 6 topology.

Connection to WEB.
When the complete project is finished, using functionality of Urbano, it is possible very easy to publish the whole project on WEB. Urbano uses innovative Autodesk MapGuide technology for such tasks. From desktop application there is an automatic procedure which through wizzard creates all necessary data. The second step is administrative tool which is used to define options of the WEB project. Data created from desktop application are prepared through administrative application in a just few steps. After that the whole project is uploaded to MapGuide server. The third step is client application which has all necessary functionality to view, query, analyze and report data through Internet.
